Maritime

Brand delivers IoT-based asset monitoring at marinas, combined with secure Internet and VoIP access for vessels, is powered by Brand’s seamless Layer2 mobility platform.

Brand delivers integrated Vessel tracking and management, along with onboard access for passengers, crew, bridge, and vessel systems, are facilitated by Brand’s seamless integration of LEO satellite services such as Starlink, 4G, 5G, and local WiFi networks. This robust solution provides an automatic, secure, single-network IP connection for reliable Internet and Cloud access.

Anti-Piracy

In maritime settings, safe, secure, and encrypted communications are paramount, especially in areas where piracy is prevalent. Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), while essential for vessel tracking and collision avoidance, makes a ship’s position visible to the public, including potential threats like pirates. In such cases, emergency turning off AIS may become necessary for security reasons. However, the challenge is ensuring the vessel remains in communication with fleet management and authorities without compromising security.

Fleet Wide Secure Virtual Networks

Implementing a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or VNETs (Virtual Networks) over satellite communications provides a secure, encrypted tunnel for all communication between the vessel and fleet management. This ensures that sensitive data and locations are not exposed to external threats.

The Brand solution creates multiple VNETs that are securely isolated from each other and can serve multiple stakeholders off ship.  VNET1 could be internet access for crew or passengers, VNET2 could be bridge data, NMEA200 data for remote logging or analysis including encrypted tracking information, VNET3 could be encrypted voice channels, and in the case of Border Control VNET4 could be Biometric data for identification of individuals.

Border Patrol

In high-risk areas, especially near territorial waters or conflict zones, biometric data collection for crew, passengers, stowaways or migrants may be required. The Brand platform securely handles the transmission of such data to a central border control authority using military grade encryption and without leaking any information to the public or unauthorized entities.

This solution ensures:

  • Real-time Verification: Biometric information is sent securely in real-time for identification or recording.
  • Compliance with Privacy Laws: Personal data is handled under strict encryption and policy-based access, ensuring compliance with laws.
  • Controlled Access: Only authorized personnel have access to this sensitive data, reducing the risks of identity theft or privacy breaches.
  • Multiple Secure Access Channels: Provides isolated data access paths / channels for other operational stakeholders who are not authorised for Biometric access.
  • Scaleable: Can be used as as comprehensive data access devcie on a border control ship or a smaller device for use on fast Patrol Ribs, both delivering secure data to the point of need.

Encrypted Voice Channels

  • Purpose: Brand delivers secure voice communication between the vessel and stakeholders such as fleet management, port authorities, or security personnel delivering seamless extensions of the shore based office to the bridge or other ship function.
  • Security: Encrypted VoIP (Voice over IP) channels are established over the Brand VNET, ensuring that conversations cannot be intercepted or monitored by unauthorized parties. Strong encryption protocols such as Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) secure voice to a degree but the Brand military grade encryption is far stronger and is employed to secure the voice data.
  • Redundancy: In case of a failure in the primary communication system, the Brand platform will seamlessly, and without failure of the connection, move to an alternate bearer to maintain connectivity, in port this could mean picking up shore based wifi or mobile and then roaming onto satellite as the ship departs to sea.  The advent of LEO satellite such as Starlink has made significant improvements to ship based communications, ensuring end to end security is still a fundamental requirement.

The Brand platform can also deliver effective “Smart City” solutions to Marinas for monitoring Berth holder Electricity, on board additional services such as bilge pump activation monitors, marina WiFi, CCTV and enviromental and weather conditions monitoring.

A solution to fit all Maritime Needs

Implementing the Brand multi-VNET solution over terestial or satellite communications enables the vessel to segment its data flows and provide secure, encrypted communication channels to a range of stakeholders. Whether it’s internet access for the crew, operational data for fleet management, secure voice channels, or biometric data for border control, this architecture offers robust protection against cyber threats while ensuring efficient communication. Each VNET is securely isolated from the others, allowing the vessel to operate in complex environments with high levels of security and flexibility.
